background
A short history of Selkirk regeneration and its activities.
Selkirk Regeneration Group (2005-2009)
Selkirk Regeneration Group was an informal partnership, formed in 2005 with the aim “to improve the well-being, quality of life and opportunities of the people of Selkirk and the surrounding area”. It brought together representatives many different organisations within the community, to try to take forward some practical projects to benefit the people of Selkirk. The group achieved charitable status in 2006.
Selkirk Regeneration Company (2009-2020)
In 2009, the Regeneration Group reconstituted as a Company limited by Guarantee, Selkirk Regeneration Company, to allow it to develop its aims further, including the options of owning property and employing staff. The initial Directors of the Company were Lindsay Neil, David Bethune, Ian King and Kirstin Scott, with 90 individuals registering as members, able to attend general meetings, elect Directors, and input their ideas to the Board.
Achievements of SRC included:
- obtaining a Climate Challenge Fund grant to employ a Carbon Reduction Officer
- negotiating ownership of the derelict shop at 1 Tower Street
- establishing biennial Arts Festival
- initiating the Townscape Heritage Initiative to investigate and develop gap sites in the town centre
- carrying out feasibility studies for a community-owned windfarm
- establishing FairTrade Town status for Selkirk
- setting up a temporary community hub in the former Cross Keys Inn
- lobbying for a Selkirk by-pass
- obtaining ownership and then renovating the derelict shop at 5 Tower Street
- assisting Selkirk Community Shed in their search for premises
- publishing a book of old photographs of Selkirk from the Edwards archive
- cooperating with SBC and HES in the Selkirk CARS (Conservation area regeneration scheme) project
Selkirk Regneration (SCIO) (2020 – )
SRC reconstituted as a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) in 2020. This means that it retains its charitable status and aims, but is no longer under the auspices of Companies House and Company Law, making the admin and finances much more straightforward. The Directors of SRC became the initial trustees of the SCIO.
